Cynthia Duerer grew up the oldest of five children in the Reid Whitfield family, raised in the East Texas Piney Woods of North Beaumont. The Whitfield home was a haven for animals of every kind: raccoons and squirrels roamed the property alongside horses and dogs. Above all, the family were dog lovers, and the place they called home was, by every measure, a dog's paradise.

The seed for Luck's Legacy was planted decades before Cynthia ever sat down to write. Near the family's land stood a stretch of woods tied to local legend: a mysterious figure known only as Mr. Trahan was said to have buried a fortune in gold beneath one of the live oak trees there. The story was never confirmed, but old diggings found beneath the oaks suggested someone, at some point, believed it enough to look. The legend captivated the Whitfield children, Cynthia most of all, before fading into half-remembered family lore.

Years later, sitting beneath one of those very live oaks, by then part of her own front yard, Cynthia felt the old story stir back to life. True to her lifelong love of dogs, she knew any tale built from that legend needed a loyal four-legged companion at its heart. That instinct grew into Shadow, the mysterious white dog who has walked beside the Devlin family through every book in the series since.

Though several teachers encouraged her toward journalism, Cynthia followed a different calling, earning a degree in Elementary Education from Lamar State College of Technology. She went on to teach in Houston, Texas, for over two decades, and it was there she met her husband, Bob Duerer, a descendant of the Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer, famed for his iconic Praying Hands.

Writing is to an adult what play is to a child. — Robert Louis Stevenson

Cynthia counts Robert Louis Stevenson among her favorite literary influences, and is fond of his belief that writing is to an adult what play is to a child. Now retired from teaching, she has finally found time to play. She continues to give back to her community by teaching the Bible to preteens at Jersey Village Baptist Church in Northwest Houston.
